The Government Accountability Office declared that the 10-mile radius of emergency zones around nuclear power plants is adequate, but “will be re-evaluated as part of [the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s] lessons learned” after the reactor meltdowns at Fukushima Daiichi. The study, released April 10, recommended the commission obtain more information on public response. The agency disagreed. “The American government recommended that those within 50 miles evacuate,” Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) stated. She notes there are 8 million people within 50 miles of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station plant. Another GAO report April 11, noted that accumulating on-site nuclear waste, like that at the San Onofre and Diablo Canyon plants, may be a good thing in the short term while the Department of Energy works on a new long-term waste repository.
