Governor Deposits Texas Energy Money

Energy companies donated additional money to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger at the end of 2004, according to new state filings. Clean Energy of Seal Beach and Forbes 400 oil maven T. Boone Pickens of BP Capital were among the biggest contributors to the governor?s Californians for Schwarzenegger Committee. Clean Energy and Pickens each donated $20,000 to the committee at the beginning of December. Exxon Mobil donated $10,000 back in July, which was not previously reported. In other political contributions, ChevronTexaco, oil refiner and proposed developer of a liquefied natural gas terminal on the coast of Baja California, gave $115,000 to the Committee for Industrial Safety, sponsored by Contra Costa county oil refineries. The committee?s filings are not on line, so it is unclear where it spent its money. The Sacramento Bee reported last fall that the organization donated $42,000 to the governor?s effort to reorganize state government. The governor also vacuumed up the donations on a November trip to Texas. In addition to Pickens?s big check, Dyncorp, a Fort Worth?based government contracting company with an energy business, donated $5,000, part of a $100,000 haul. The Californians for Schwarzenegger Committee spends most of its money on advertising, direct mail, and consulting to promote the governor?s political agenda. In other new filings, Southern California Edison showed it had donated another $225,000 to defeating Moreno Valley Measure N, which would have crimped the expansion of the fledging municipal greenfield utility ( Circuit , Nov. 5, 2004). The measure, however, narrowly lost. The utility spent more than $2.1 million to defeat the city?s municipalization effort, according to Charlie Wilson, Edison spokesperson.
