CPUC, CAISO Deal Covers Redundancies

The California Independent System Operator and state regulators reached a deal that gives the California Public Utilities Commission siting authority over duplicative projects within its jurisdiction. The May 13 memorandum of understanding also provides for CAISO’s “formal assessment” of state regulators’ transmission scenarios. Noting that there are more transmission and generation projects in the queue for the grid operator than required, CAISO chief executive officer Yakout Mansour asked the grid operator board May 17, “How can we justify” potentially redundant projects? He added the organization should “calculate the economics. Then we can determine what’s actually needed.”
