Flex Alert Program Gets $10M

On Dec. 4, the California Public Utilities Commission approved continuing the state’s “Flex Alert” program in 2015, with $10 million of funding statewide. Southern California Edison will be the lead utility under the commission’s decision. The commission also delegated to its staff the power to issue citations to electric utilities for safety violations. The commission in 2011 delegated the agency’s staff the power to issue citations for safety violations by gas utilities, based on recommendations by the federal government and an independent task force that studied the Pacific Gas & Electric gas line explosion in San Bruno in 2010.
