Gas Lobbies Against EPA ‘Tailoring’

The Environmental Protection Agency’s plan to exempt from enforcement smaller greenhouse gas emitters in favor of managing larger ones came under fire from natural gas companies. The Natural Gas Supply Association and Interstate Natural Gas Association of America stated the EPA’s move would “lead to permitting delays.” Sempra Energy is one of the gas association’s members The issue is deemed “tailoring.” That is, tailoring enforcement to larger emitters. “Under the Proposed Tailoring Rule, the increased number of permits that will require processing combined with greater regulatory complexity would severely challenge natural gas production, transmission, storage, and gas distribution facilities, leading to adverse implications for regional and national energy security,” wrote lobbyists January 22.
