Pro-Nuke Initiative Floated

By Published On: July 13, 2007

Assemblymember Chuck DeVore (R-Irvine) filed an initiative that would repeal California’s current ban on building new nuclear power plants. The “Energy Independence and Zero Carbon Dioxide Emission Electrical Generation Act of 2008” would repeal the state’s current prohibition on building nuclear power plants until the issue of siting a permanent waste repository for the high-level radioactive plutonium and other leftovers of the nuclear fission process is finally resolved. The language of the proposed initiative, filed July 5 with the Secretary of State, would also forbid building nuclear plants in seismically active areas and prohibit them from using cooling water from “special biological significance” areas. DeVore authored a bill to the same effect in April but was shot down in committee (Circuit, April 20, 2007).
