President Obama is proposing new faces at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Nominee Jeffery Baran is currently staff director for energy & environment on the U.S. House Energy & Commerce Committee. He’s also been an attorney for the committee. Another nominee, Stephen Burns, is currently the head of legal affairs for the Organization for Economic Cooperation & Development. He also served as commission attorney from 2009 to 2012. Pacific Gas & Electric Co. took Diablo Canyon unit 2 offline July 19 to perform scheduled cleaning of electrical equipment on the non-nuclear side of the plant. The equipment is located outside of the main facility and supports moving power to the state’s electric grid, according to the utility. The Sacramento Municipal Utility District received a 50-year license from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for the 668 MW Upper American River Project. It provides 15 percent of the muni’s load. Sacramento noted it is intending to pursue infrastructure upgrades, including showers at a “ski chalet.”
