The Sacramento Municipal Utility District awarded a $5.5 million contract to begin construction on its $100 million corporate yard. “It will be the largest net-zero site in North America,” said SMUD general services manager Mike Wirsch Jan. 13. The new 51-acre corporate facility, which is expected to cost about $111 million to build, is to include a six-story, 203,000-square-foot office building; vehicle fueling, storage and maintenance facilities; and service tool storage. The new facility’s expected to be complete in 2013, after which the current 19-acre campus will be put up for sale, Wirsch said.
