Utility Solar Turf Bill Defeated

By Published On: September 7, 2012

A bill that pushed against utility monopolies by attempting to open up the solar market to renters and others unable to invest in their own solar rooftop was held in committee and failed to win a final vote. Sen. Lois Wolk’s (D-Davis) bill that would have allowed independent generators to sell up to 2,000 MW of solar power into closed investor-owned utility markets was pulled out of the legislation ring Aug. 31. SB 843 was sent back to the Assembly Utilities & Commerce Committee and not released before the midnight deadline for getting bills passed off the floor. Wolk probably won’t reintroduce the bill next year, said a staffer.
