A bill to cover the demise of the permanent repository at Yucca Mountain aims to pay for alternative sites. The metaphorical carrot for allowing high-level radioactive waste in someone’s backyard was proposed July 1 by Senator Lisa Murkowski’s (R-AK). S. 1320 does not determine where the waste should reside, although it encourages two sites nationwide. It sends $1 million/year to local governments to incent them to bid on a waste site. The legislation entertains three governments to rival for hosting a repository. After a site is chosen, the bill allows for a $6 million signing agreement payoff. After that, the federal government is set to send the local area $10 million/year or $15 million/metric ton of waste.
