The Los Angeles Department of Water & Power commissioned its 10 MW Adelanto Solar Power Project July 23. The $48 million plant is expected to produce an average of 20,000 MWh of power annually for the next 25 years. LADWP general manager Ron Nichols called Adelanto “a key component” of LADWP’s march from 20 percent to 33 percent renewable energy by 2020. The 42-acre project--located at the muni’s Adelanto Switching Station near the Tehachapi Mountains--is to be joined by another 8.5 MW solar installation, now under construction, according to the department. LADWP is building that project near its 120 MW Pine Tree Wind Farm in the Tehachapi Mountains. Placing the solar systems near existing muni facilities is faster and less expensive than placing them in other areas, noted Aram Benyamin, LADWP senior assistant general manager.
