While more electricity is being consumed than during the energy crisis, so far it has resulted only in a mild warning from the state this week. As the California Independent System Operator predicted a record day of use July 14, the state declared a "Flex Your Power Now!" day in an attempt to get customers to use less peak energy. This is the first real heat wave of the year. Last year, the consumption record—45,597 MW—was set on September 8, far into the dog days of summer. On Thursday, July 14, consumption climbed to 44,369 MW. The grid operator originally estimated the peak for July 15 at 45,533 MW, but revised it downward to 44,833 MW late on July 14. The Sacramento Municipal Utility District also expected record usage July 14 at 2,920 MW. That surpasses the muni's July 13 record of 2,886 MW. The muni asked customers to set thermostats no lower than 78 degrees on the 100-plus-degree days.
