Updated Feb. 22. Edison International reported a fourth quarter 2017 net loss of $545 million compared to net income of $329 million in the fourth quarter of 2016 on Feb. 22. Earnings at its utility, Southern California Edison, declined $437 million from those in the fourth quarter of 2016. Meanwhile, earnings also slowed at Pacific Gas & Electric in the fourth quarter of last year. Current will have full earnings reports on the state’s regulated utilities next week after Sempra Energy releases its results. The Trump Administration’s rollback of methane control rules for oil and gas producers operating on federal land will cut back on royalty payments that fund local facilities, like road maintenance, health centers, and school supplies in the rural areas where wells are located, according to the Environmental Defense Fund. Relaxing the Obama Administration rules will allow $1 million worth of natural gas a day to be emitted into the atmosphere and eventually cost some $800 million in foregone royalty payments. The Western Governors Association earlier this month backed opening up western land to mining of “critical” minerals, such as rare earths, particularly for manufacturing alternative energy technologies. The governors also voiced support for streamlined permitting of mining operations in the Western U.S., while maintaining environmental protections. They outlined their goals in a letter to federal lawmakers on H.R. 520, the National Strategic & Critical Minerals Production Act. Rare earths are used in wind turbines, solar panels, and electric vehicle components.
