If legislation relaunching the governor?s Million Solar Roofs initiative is successful, California Public Utilities Commission president Mike Peevey and commissioner Susan Kennedy said, it could exhaust the commission?s self-generation incentive program fund. That fund is expected to be the source of subsidies for the Million Solar program embodied in SB 1 and SB 1017. The CPUC?s renewable self-generation fund was expected to be increased to $300 million at the end of last year but was kept at $125 million per year (<i>Circuit</i>, Feb. 4, 2005). ?I strongly encourage the utilities to apply future year funds to this year?s projects,? said Peevey in a March 7 ruling. Thus, if the fund is used for the Million Solar program, current projects seeking funding for more than one year will not be jeopardized. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, along with bill authors Kevin Murray (D-Culver City) and John Campbell (R-Irvine), announced the reworked Million Solar Roofs initiative February 28. Hearings on the bill at the Legislature have been set for early May.
